NHS Scotland has banned the use of the ward dad in a maternity handbook so as not to offend gay couples and replaced it by partner? It is ridiculous. What do others think

It's a mad world. Maybe it always has been, but it seems to be getting worse.
Do you have a link?
is it ridiculous ? yes.
does the baby not have a dad in any sense of the word? immaculate conception I suppose.

nhs stupid imo.

For once Gordon I find myself in agreement with you, PC gone mad!

///What have Gays to do with Maternity handbooks?///

I think I've read somewhere that some females are Gay, but I could be wrong of course!
don't do what I did...... young lad visiting SCBU, '' can I see baby smith '' yes. are you the big brother ? '' no im the father '' ..........
This is totally daft.
A decision made by someone who is very insecure in their position.

Personally I would not like to see the use of 'Dad' and would prefer to see 'Father' but using partner in this instance is weak and daft.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lesbian

A lesbian is a female homosexual; a female who experiences romantic love or sexual attraction to other females.
Absolutely ridiculous.

And I have definitely read that Females are not 'DADS' neither can they make other females pregnant.

so the correct wording would be partner ?

Let's see, Father equates to Dad, so begins to make Partner sound better then!
Sensible option would be to re-write the phrase to 'father or partner'.

Or to more accurately describe modern relationships, 'father, partner, or the bloke who got you knocked up, and who will not feature in your child's upbringing after the first couple of years'.

So would it not make sense, to cover all options, and refer to partners, rather than dads?

That way, no-one is excluded?

Sp, you overlooked the 'not at all' option! (imo)

You know what...you make a good point.

There will be women who have chosen to have children by sperm donation, so the dad/partner thing would not be relevant there.

I think the problem is that some think that there's a 'one size fits all' method of writing pamphlets and documentation. That may have been true 70 years ago, but as many of us now know, that's not necessarily the case in 2014.
