NHS Scotland has banned the use of the ward dad in a maternity handbook so as not to offend gay couples and replaced it by partner? It is ridiculous. What do others think

Personally I would not like to see the use of 'Dad' and would prefer to see 'Father' but using partner in this instance is weak and daft.

Sensible option would be to re-write the phrase to 'father or partner'.

Or to more accurately describe modern relationships, 'father, partner, or the bloke who got you knocked up, and who will not feature in your child's upbringing after the first couple of years'.

You know what...you make a good point.

There will be women who have chosen to have children by sperm donation, so the dad/partner thing would not be relevant there.

I think the problem is that some think that there's a 'one size fits all' method of writing pamphlets and documentation. That may have been true 70 years ago, but as many of us now know, that's not necessarily the case in 2014.
