Insofar as the gun is concerned, I din't realize we were discussing Ms. Palin running for President, since you never mentioned that previously. However, in context, my remark indicated she is self sufficient (an unusual trait in this day and age).
What is it you find so remarkable about her children's names? Seems to me it's nobody's business but her and her husband's... Other than her being anti-abortion in deed as well as speech, what other fault can you actually point to.
As I mentioned eralier, our seemingly well spoken President has more than his share of gaffes and Vice President Biden is a complete nincompoop and can't string together three words into a coherent sentence. I've googled your own Prime Ministers speaking ability and guess what? Plenty to go around... but what does that have to do with the price of tea in China?
Right wing... sure, but look what the left wing has done to this country in 10 years...

Clanad, I think it's fair to say that articulacy, and the ability to think on your feet, are highly regarded as a political asset in this country - which is why the top jobs so often go to expensively educated public shool boys who've spent time in debating societies (and in Cameron's case, working in PR). I'm not personally sure that glibness is praiseworthy; but the electorate seems to think otherwise. The occasional verbal gaffe is forgiven but anyone who made as many as George W Bush, for instance, would be laughed out of office here.
By contrast, would I be right in thinking that a US politician should be "a guy you'd have a beer with"? Which is possibly why people like Gore and Romney don't make it to the presidency: American voters seem more wary of rich kids, while British voters love them and don't envisage having a beer with a politician anyway.
This is meant as an observation, not a criticism. I don't think American politicians are worse than British ones, but I do think they're elected because of different personal qualities.

Clanad.....Can I repeat....you brought up the subject of "being good with a gun" not me and you have still to answer my question...To give you every assistance, here it is again ::
"I know you are American but how does "being handy with a gun" make her an ideal candidate for election"
Ignore my question if you wish, of course, as is your right but I should explain that it is customary here on AB to respond to specific questions.
There may be, indeed be excellent reasons why being proficient with a firearm is important to an American politician but it isn't immediately obvious to us on this side of the Atlantic. Indeed, I can't recall an occasion in our past when the question has come up, so please help us in our ignorance.
Best wishes !

mikey, being handy with a gun is as useful to a US politician as saying what football team they support is to a British one. Americans spend much more time hunting and fishing than Brits do and shooting properly is a useful accomplishment. A president may never have time to do it, but does anyone seriously think Cameron's support for Aston Villa makes him a better PM?
Because the majority of Americans ascribe to the right to bear arms and do so, mikey.....some 40% plus of houses possessing them.....(oh and 5 mln members of the NRA).
That's why it's highly unlikely that the 2nd Amendment will be overturned, even allowing for the machinations of both Houses, particularly the Senate when it comes to the Amendments, and a large wedge of Americans are comfortable with it and form the core of the lobby bloc, despite the various and regular shoot-outs.

Until you posted jno, I had no idea that dave supports Aston Villa, which rather makes my point ! It isn't important, in any way whatsoever. What football team, sorry..."Soccer" team does ed, Cleggie and nigel support
( these questions don't really require an answer ! )
I remain terribly interested in Clanad's reply

DTC...qualify for what exactly ?
I am not, for one minute, underestimating the influence that the NRA have on American politics, but I still want to know, in addition to Palins other qualities, if any, why "being good with a gun" is seen as important. I repeat, it wasn't a factor in Obama's election.
