I think you are sadly misinformed.It is precisely the protective umbrella that is preventing civilian Israeli casualties.The anti missile Ground to Air missiles were shown in action on the TV news a few nights back showing these potentially lethal Hamas rockets(Not squibs as you contemptuously call them) being destroyed in flight over Israeli air space.Are you implying that is Israeli propaganda?

Retro, mostly propaganda yes, whilst patriot type missiles are partially effective against large long range rockets they are not effective against short range home made rockets that only have a flight time of a few seconds. The Israeli government tells lie after lie and distort facts time after time. You cannot believe anything they say. They may even be worse in this respect than hamas.

I was'nt actually suggesting that Patriots are being used in this present conflict.I mentioned Patriots as one example of their DEFENSIVE umbrella as used in the 2nd Gulf War against Scuds.The Israelis are unlikely to broadcast the data of their current defensive missiles.We know about Patriots because they were manufactured and supplied by the US to Israel.Israel claimed that some Hamas rockets ,destined for Israel, fell short in Gaza and were the cause of Palestinian deaths recently.It would seem because Israel claimed that you automatically believe it's propaganda and could'nt possibly be rockets fired by Hammas.Is that is why you naively state that Hammas "squibs" are harmless and could'nt possibly have fallen short and killed civilians?I know who's version I would believe.Hammas coul'nt lie straight in bed if it suits their aims.

I'm not sure who is being naive here, but how do you acount for the fact(which even the Israelis don't deny) that that over 2000 hamas rockets have only killed one person. Surely the Israeli missile shield is not that effective?

Why should'nt it be effective.The Israelis have been forced to perfect their defense over many years because of the threats against them from Arab countries.The Israelies live in a modern world unlike their adversaries.

Not only are we talking about Defensive missiles that prevent Israeli casualties but as I wrote earlier the Israelis live in a modern world.They possess radar and early warning systems that enable the Israelis some chance of seeking refuge in air raid shelters that most buildings in Israel are obliged to have because of the continual blitz of Hammas rockets.I don't see Hammas building tunnels and air raid shelters for their own people.No they use their tunnels for offensive,cowardly attacks into Israel wearing Israeli uniforms and ,of course,smuggling more rockets via Sinai and Egypt from Syria

What has been going on in Gaza is a tragedy of course.

it's a matter of proportionality. in WW2, we were waging total war. the Israelis aren't doing that, in fact it's doubtful if the conflict is a war at all.

jomfl, you keep going on about the "score" and the inneffectiveness of hamas rockets. Anyone with a brain cell should reasonably ask, then why do they fire them, especially when they know what the retaliation will be? One must conclude therefore that hamas are using the deaths of civilians as a propaganda weapon to fool the gullible in the west into believing that Israel are the bad guys.

Tora, that is certainly one explanation, but there are many others. Whilst the Israelis have been protected by the security wall hamas have been unable to take on Israeli soldiers face to face. Once they have been provoked into entering Gaza the playing field is more even and the Israelis have taken caualties. If it opens the eyes of the world to what Israel has become and what it is doing it may force the Israelis to comply with at least some of the many UN ruling that it has so far chosen to ignore. Hamas are never going to win against tanks and fighter /bomber jets but they have no choice as Israel has stolen their land and is now strangling them. It has never been a fair fight as hamas is effectively fighting the US.

How have htey stolen their land? Gaza is not occupied. If you mean Israel itself then you can blame the allies after WW2 for allocating the "promised land". Are they seriously expecting Israel to dissolve away from the region. If you are referring to he west bank, yes that's occupied, fair enough but this is curently about gaza.

Whether the iron dome is effective or the hamas rockets are ineffective the fact remains that very few Israelis are killed by the hamas rockets and the Israeli response is grossly disproportionate. My cynical side says that the Israelis resent having to spend so much money to stay in a land that they stole so are wreaking vengeance upon the rightful owners in the best biblical fashion.

Zeuhl, thanks for posting up the map. Being the age I am and having witnessed via the media the whole Israeli land grab decade by decade I forget that many young people are not aware of what has happened over the last half century or so. :-)
