Every 100 years or so a group of ultra-puritanical muslims gallop out of the desert putting everybody to the sword right and left because they have become slack and self indulgent and don't pay sufficient respect to the word of the prophet. 100 years later they get kicked out because they have become slightly more humane and civilised....and so on.
