The BBC forecasters have been going on about us being in a "pocket of cold air", lately, which was allowed to come this far south by a large meander in the jet stream. Any dust that get to that height will then cut at right angles across most of the transatlantic tracks, potentially causing them to be diverted all over the place.
It has also been said that the jetstream is meandering more than it ised to because the jet is not flowing as strongly as it used to. This, in turn is because of a reduced temperature differential between the mid and high latitude air masses, due to the arctic warming faster than other parts of the planet.
If high altitude dust, catching the sun, transfers heat to the air at that level, the jet could weaken further. Our weather could become very unpredictable - Siberian air leaking in again, for instance.
