What an incredibly useful addition to the thread Kromo.
No. I can watch those adverts with total detachment and immunity.
I have a similar view to NJ. Why have 4,5,6 even 7 child families in areas where drought/famine are a perennial occurrence?
Yes, I've had tears in my eyes over the plight of starving children, which is why I DD a set sum every month to Save the Children.
As noble as that is, viv, we don't want to Save the Children. We need to stop them being conceived.

I'm not talking about modifying genes, ag. I'm talking about modifying attitudes and behaviour. As I understand it humans have moved on a bit from being simple hostages to instinctive behaviour when it is not appropriate.
Easier said than done NJ, modifying attitudes extends to the regimes who have greater priorities than the education and welfare of the most vulnerable.
It's quite obvious that a proper birth control programme is needed throughout Africa before it implodes catastrophically:

It's growing at an alarming rate and is way beyond all projected figures.
Canary, others might think not of me, I do have a lot of feelings but what get's my back up, the rulers in these far off Country's for all see, seem very well dressed, in large fancy cars, in large House's, maids / swimming pools, do you think their priority's are wrong? there should not be any person starving in the world, but whilst there is Greed amongst the power full, what you have posted will always happen.
Oxfam was formed in 1942. That's 72 years ago! Just how long must Oxfam and the dozens of other similar charities continue before their work is complete and there are no starving people in the world? Is it really an impossible task?
I rarely cry but I do get severe smoke in my eyes when I see some of the images.
It shouldn't be an impossible task Graham but a lot of issues need to be addressed. The mighty challenge is only going to worsen when presented with the sort of statistics relating to Africa, courtesy of CD.

I don't see any significant initiative that is going to reverse the trend.
Add a few zeroes, your number is too low.

Yes...

I cry a lot though.
No, I am firmly in the NJ camp.

As I have said many times on this site (and usually called some name by a bleeding heart liberal) I will not contribute to saving a child. I would however contribute to a castration program.
I was away when Live Aid was broadcast but my mind forever assoaciates the sound of Drive by The Cars with a clip of one man tenderly adusting the blanket on his dead or dying baby.

I remember the nurses in the aid compound saying that someone left a dying baby at the gate and they couldn't take the baby in because if they did, there would be a thousand there the next day, so they had to leave the baby to die.

That made me cry - and still does.
yep, I'm in the contraception camp too, stop producing then they won't starve.
I'm firmly in the contraception camp but it still makes me cry to think that these children are suffering, they didn't ask to be born.

I don't think the problem will be solved anytime soon unfortunately :(
There are plenty of children in this country who are born into families that can't feed them -would you all advocate castration for these families too? Do you want the world to end up like China where you are penalized for having more than one child? Or is it just the Black 3rd world humans you want to castrate?
Not at all, but I see no point in bringing a child into the world to face starvation, and by contraception, I mean the pill/implant etc, not castration.
Rocky the castration comment was aimed at youngmafblog. However, like I said, its a Global problem not just a third world one. There is nothing we can do about it -education does not work when the problems are caused by Wars and Governments that want to keep their population in the dark ages. If free contraception was the answer we would have no teenage or unwanted pregnancies in this country would we?
Well children here are provided for by the state aren't they, in the African countries there is nothing apart from aid. I don't know what the answer is, I just find it incredibly sad, you'd think I'd be desensitised by the constant bombardment of adverts showing these poor kids by not, but I'm really not :(
