I don't normally post things like this and resisted the urge to do so about Gerry Anderson last week but, perhaps because, not many will have heard of him, I thought he was due his tribute here: just a quiet, determined and decent policeman who dedicated himself in highly dangerous and difficult circumstances to bringing some of the UK's most dangerous killers to justice.

Before they were finally arrested the police had occasion to search the taxi driven by one of the killers.(it was known that a black taxi was used in the abduction of the victims) Blood stains were found in it but the story that it was sheeps blood was accepted.
The killers became careless and one of their victims survived. He was able to identify a number of the men who had kidnapped him.

A worthy tribute indeed. He received a number of accolades and his detection strike rate was outstanding.
Anyone who has read about the Shankill Butchers as I have would know that this was a gang whose acts of barbarism knew no bounds.
I would certainly not liked to have been a police officer during the height of the Troubles....
