In 2014, why is this still happening?

And this isn't a 'making a point' thread...I'm genuinely interested in the possible reasons behind this.

Is it religious fundamentalism? Anger at perceived favouritism towards an admittedly small minority? Mental illness? Bravado?

Again - I'm not making a point, I would like to hear your ideas as to why someone would do this?

I've seen lads having fights in nightclubs, but this is different - any ideas as to why it still happens (and I promise not to shout anyone down - honest).

I tell you what Svejk, I've noticed again tonight how debates turn abusive eldewhere. Why is this? There is a simple way of disagreeing as you put it. Ive had a couple of big differences of opinion and still been thanked for a 'courteous' discussion!

But back to my my question - why do you think these attacks continue (again - see my second link).

retrocop ha proffered the suggestion that gay people flaunting their sexuality by going to bars and clubs may be part of the reason. I would have thought it was more complex than that.

What are *your* thoughts?
