We are more likely to be discussing an incident where witnesses to an event don't intervene at all so full credit to the lad who got stuck in without fearing the consequences or whether the culprit had a weapon.

As for the officers, it is somewhat surprising that he was allowed to jump out of the car and questions will be asked there I'm sure.

I think that they know very well how to restrain a prisoner, however what they do have to be careful of, is that in the course of restraining one that person does not die of an inbuilt condition, then they are in deep trouble.

However congratulations to that lad, but as said previously if the person had died, he would not be looking forward to an award, but him along with the officers would be facing an inquiry.

I worked in a psychiatric hospital and I was retrained annually.

This lad has shown us what shold be done.

However as AOG has pointed out, in this hand wringing, litigious society we now live in any action like this can result in either being sued or a prosecution.

No matter how often they are retrained there are only a few basic methods of restraining a person, but there are no limits to the way a person can get violent in such situations, so sometimes one has to divert from the manual (no pun intended) according to the situation at the time.

We hear so much bad news about our young people, that this makes such a pleasant change. Give him a job in the Police please !
