I am reminded of a conversation ( rather short ) I had with my late father when in the course of something, I mentioned that X had given his girl-friend/mother ( no not the same woman ) a silver cross

Manchester Dog's home is just down the road, S.E Asia, the majority of people could not name one country i.e it hardly exists.

Famine, floods, disease is seen as part of their culture and we in the UK have been immunised by the pictures in the media......it has no impact anymore.

I agree with sqad - we can relate to the dog's home fire which was a criminal offence by the sound of it. Natural happenings in far-0ff countries are a fact for life for those people, and are very remote from us.

The dogs' home problem is a one-off. As an animal lover the fact that these poor dogs were in the building to start with is a horrible thought.

I have no problem with people in other parts of the world eating cats and dogs. I object to them treating them exceptionally cruelly to improve the meat.

Disasters are happening all over the world and are constant. Helping is a bit like pi55ing in the sea. I do voluntary work for Oxfam and sometimes I wonder if we are making any impact. The whole situation is very complex.

At the end of the day, SE Asia aside for a moment, there will always be problems in third world countries like Sudan etc, no matter how much money people throw at this - Band Aid concert in the 80s as an example - sadly the situation never changes. People need to stop reproducing. I would rather give to local charities at home and animals charities as then there is a chance something gets done with the donations.

The Dogs' Home is on our territory, our problem and we can do something about it to help solve one less evil in the world. Overseas Aid is something which is governmentally organised and we have to trust that our involuntary donations through taxation will help, so we are all already donating. Any other money collected is voluntary and extra. We do not have money directed by the British government to help UK dogs' homes, they rely completely on voluntary donations. Perhaps this helps to explain the figures.
