So says Canon Andrew White, of Baghdad's St George's Church, the only Anglican church in Iraq. ""Over a 1000 Iraqi troops were killed by them [IS] yesterday, things are so bad. As I said all the military air strikes are doing nothing. If ever we needed your prayer it is now."

The news comes amid reports that a Syrian terror group linked to Al-Qaeda is considering an alliance with IS militants. Militant group al-Nusra warned that countries taking part in the US-led effort were engaging in a war against Islam, calling for jihadists to target those involved.

I heard this on tonight's Channel 4 News. It made me weep for this sorry, sorry, world. What on earth is to be done?

We may not see eye to eye on the DLT thread Naomi but I also saw CH4 news and was similarly made tearful and distressed. It's all so horrible, truly awful. I despair, goodness knows where it will all end.

I can’t get my head around the magnitude of the problem. Not only are we facing this current, and serious, problem with I.S. but there are other wars and disasters caused by humans occurring all over the planet at any given time.

In this country we moan if we can’t get the brand of bread that we want. My cats are fed and cared for better than many children, they have excellent medical care and are both members of my family.

The current problems in the Middle East may be solved by bombing and killing – but for how long? If you eradicate a colony of feral cats, a new colony moves into the territory. Instead, they are caught, neutered and then released. The colony won’t keep growing and may eventually die out on its own. (I am not too sure if that exact method can be used on humans).

The people fighting need to solve the problems from within. There needs to be compromise – and fanatics are not known for their skills at compromising.
