Can we not find a way of appealing to the ECHR about that, baz?
It's surprising how often car tax couldn't be carried over to the new owner under the old system, bazwillrun
yes they have in effect increased the total VED taken by 8.25% neat!
//I never understood why I had to display a free tax disc on my mobility scooter? //

No I leave that to the cyclists, they do such a better job of it.
Pensioners on cycles..........Arghhhhh!
I don't know many circumstances where the unused portion of the Excise licence could not be handed to the new owner when a vehicle was sold, hc. Perhaps you could tell us about those that you know of.

In the past, if you had a few months to run on your tax and you sold the vehicle you could simply do so with the tax and the new owner would get the advantage of those few months (and you could incorporate that into your asking price). A large proportion of sellers did just that.

Now that cannot be done. The Exchequer will gain an extra month's tax for every vehicle that is sold. The seller cannot reclaim the tax for the month during which it is sold and the buyer has to tax it from day one of that month. A nice scam that "would not bring in much additional revenue" according to a DVLA spokesman. It should not bring in any additional revenue and once again the public is being turned over.
NJ, if you buy a car that is taxed for a different use than you are entitled to you cannot transfer the existing tax disc - if you buy a car from a disabled person who pays zero tax, or if you buy a private car for use as private hire or vice versa are two examples.

Of course only cars sold privately are going to be affected. If you buy from a dealer it won't have road tax anyway - the former owner will have 'cashed it in' and the dealer won't tax it, he will use trade plates if he needs to take it on the public highway.
I dont have a problem with not displaying a tax disc. Change is inevitable and it will seem in a few years odd we used paper.

I disagree with the ripping off of the cash cow motorist again though. And the Tories are trying to get Mondeo mans votes? They are having a larf.

the vast majority of cars privately sold , do not change uses, Id be happy to bet the two scenarios youve descibed are miniscule numbers in the yearly figures for sold cars.

Its yet another example of legal theft from Jo Public
I just want to reassured that I will still get a reminder..
Prudie, you'll still get a reminder. To be certain, though, set a reminder on your online calendar with a reminder two weeks before.
Seems like it's a scheme well open to abuse
Thanks hc, you're right though. One will need to have some kind of personal reminder rather than relying on the brown letter.
Baz, there are many, many cars with disabled use. All those on motability are sold at the end of the three year lease and of course there are the thousands of disabled drivers that choose to buy their cars outright.
Thousands and thousands of private hire vehicles are on the road, too, and with many councils getting very strict about age of private hire vehicles on the road, thousands are sold every year.
On the plus side, you can now pay by monthly direct debit. With regar D's to having different number plates you have to show your V5 to get a set of number plates made.
If only that were true, sher.

You do need to show the V5 to get 'road legal' plates made, but you can get a pair of 'show plates' made with no proof of ownership at all.

These are (effectively) identical to legal plates, but you sign a form promising not to use them on the public highway ... yeah, right :(
How will I know what cars not to park near at carboot sales? No disc...no insurance is usually the case.
I don't understand why we couldn't have followed France and Ireland to name a couple. They have Tax, MOT and insurance on the windscreen.
From today it will finally be legal to display one of these: http://nortybits.files.wordpress.com/2013/06/sticker375x360.png
