I was minded of this, too, by 2sp's thread about children's presents. We would get one big present for Christmas or birthdays, then some little extras by way of Santa or the birthday fairy. By "big" I mean a nice dolly, or a scooter, or my bike the year I passed 11+. It did teach up to appreciate things.
