It took 6 years of war and the loss of countless of lives to stop Germany ruling us, should we now be frightened of what they now threaten us with?

It is therefore not just up to Germany, but all of the members to decide if The UK can change the rules and still ge a member.
But it is unlikely that the other 27 countries will accept a unilateral change which excempts the UK from rules the rest have to obey.
Not sure what World WR 2 has to do with anything. Not sure Germany is making any kind of threat.
They are stating that if the UK decide to leave, they are prepared to carry on without us. They couldn't really state anything else.
Frighten of what they are threatening us with? We should not be frightened because they are not threatening us with anything.

I think it's time to tell them to go away, and let us run our own country.Considering the amount of money we put in to support an organisation in which half the members seem to be always on the verge of going broke I think in the long run they'll miss us more then we will them.It will also be intereating to see how the French and Germans react when they get asked for the cash that they are not going to get from us,
It'll be like Scotland and the UK.
If it actually looks like there'll be a referendum and a vote to leave, the EU will go into full on grovelling and bribery mode. Until such time, there'll be this kind of bluff calling approach from all concerned.
I can't see how Cameron can come out of this without looking a bit foolish now because he's hinged his whole EU approach on a renegotiation of membership terms.

/// Ms Merkel is understood to have told the Prime Minister he is approaching a “point of no return” where his demands for changes in Britain’s relationship with the EU are not acceptable to Germany. ///

Adolf Merkel is just sabre rattling....she knows if we left as easily as that the rest of the EU sheep would never forgive her for letting our financial services/banking sector etc slip from their grasp.....you think the others want to pay in more ?
no matter what they say , they are desperate to keep us in its the final piece of their empire building jig-saw puzzle, we are the jewel in their greedy grasping dictatorial crown

Cameron's strategy is that we should stay in the EU but that he will negociate a better deal for the UK.
Trouble is, no one believes he can do that. And Merkel seems to be enforcing that idea.
So going into a General Election, the Conservatives policy on Europe is in tatters. If that drives the EuroSceptics to vote for UKIP, that coyld let Labour in.
So perhaps putting the knife into Cameron is Merkel being clever.
