I take it you are equating the Democrats with Leftyism.

You might want to rethink that.
Democrats = leftyism ? Really?
Who? Obama? He has until January when the newly elected Representatives and Senators are sworn in and in the mean time he intends to initiate such wildly unpopular moves such as single handidly recognizing millions of undocumented (read illegal) immigrants... mainly Mexican and South American varieties. Last month he ordered 7 million "Green Cards" to be printed. These cards authorize immigrants of the legal type to work here. This move would be totally outside of the bounds of our Constitution, which he has regularly ignored with the help of a complicit Senate. Fortunately, the House of Representatives has remained Republican for the past 6 years of his 8 year reign... uhhh... holding of the office, which has helped to moderate his more kingly moves due to their holding the purse strings. But it makes for nearly an immobile government, unfortuntely.

This election was totally about his running of the country into the ground... lack of a coherent foreign policy, no job growth and regulatory actions to "fundamentally change the country" as he promised in his inauguration speech.

//Democrats = leftyism ? Really?//

Yes. Maybe not commies like you lot but lefty nonetheless.
The Conservatives are to the left of UKIP, but no one in their right mind would call them Lefties.

Compared with the UK, the US has two rightist parties. The Democrats are more centre right, but under no sensible definition can they be accused of being Lefties.
I think it was 7 million 'golf score-cards', clannad.
The result was completely expected. The Senate and the Representatives went Democrat 8 years ago when Dubya was President. Mid term elections usually go against the ruling party. During second terms even more so.
That too, Svejk. I don't know from where Gromit receives his/her information concerning the leftyness of Democrats in this country, but even the more centrist Democrats are all in for government control of nealry everything, trying to believe, against all historical evidence, that government can do a better job of running one's life that the individual can.

For the last 6 years the President has been as far left as any President in modern history and those hungry for power have moved lock step with him... for disatrous, maybe unrecoverable results... in my humble opinion.
/// Democratic Party is a political party in the United States, widely perceived to be left-wing in the American political spectrum. ///

America doesn't have lefties. It only has righties, far righties, and loonies.
Could it be that the rush to install the first black President as failed?

Perhaps they should try and pick the best man or woman for the job regardless of their skin colour?
Yeah!!! AOG shoehorns colour into the argument again.
That which is considered the centre ground tends to move with the parties that exist. Thus the belief that Labour was still left of centre once Tony Blair had done with it.

They may be right and far right compared to the UK, but in the US they are considered left & right.

As for Obama, he simply has to ride out the term trying to get what he can using the usual diplomatic means available to politicians. At least he can get the history books to show he tried but the houses thwarted his plans. Not much consolation, but some I guess.
Interesting take on it Clanad. Nice to hear from the US citizens of their view of it.
They didn't elect a black president AOG. But a mixed race one. I find this ubiquitous dismissal of his white heritage, a bit off. Must be so for his mother Ann, also.
But (agreeing with AOG) there were numerous persons "of color" that most of the U.S. were willing to back who had more than enough experience and credentials to be elected. Former Secrtray of State, Condaleeza Rice would have made an outstanding President as would Dr. Ben Carson, and numerous others. Instead (and it is amystery) we elected an unknown with absolutely no background conditioning except as a "Community Organizer" fromt he outh side of Chicago and a half term as a Senator from Illinois.

His world tour shortly after being elected where he bowed and scraped to every toady he visited is especially memorable, in my opinion. I've often asked my lefty friends (yes, I have a few) to name one thing Obama achieved in six years... the silence is, as they say, deafining.

Obamacare, you say? The entire country is seeing the results of that disaster. Not one Democrat running in this election used it to brace his/her position, and for good cause, since many aspects of it, perhaps the entire smellything will be repealed in the future.

The Republicans must, if they're to achieve anything on which they based their campaign(s), use this moment to return to the conservative 'basement complex' (to usurp a geological term) on which the nation was founded and which served us so well for over two centuries.
"Maybe not commies like you lot"?
You know búgger all about the politics of people here, so you just presume.
Are you just deliberately trying get peoples' backs up Bogface or is this just a verbal muscle-flexing exercise to demonstrate that you "don't mince words"? Either way, it just looks like ***-stirring to me.
AOG, don't forget that "left-wing in the American political spectrum" is generally viewed to be moderate/right-wing by the rest of the world.
Clanad, Haven't you actually argued against AOG's comment there? Surely if the American people had wanted a black president come-what-may, then Rice or Carson would have been their first choice by your own admission?
How can Obama be expected to achieve anything when the system is apparently designed to maintain inertia as much as possible? He'll be lucky to achieve anything in the next two years with both houses against him -- and for basically six out of eight of his years of office he's not really had both houses fully onside. While the vote may well be as predicted, paradoxically it will just make things worse.
