Whilst I can't agree with Dr Ros Altmann's reasoning that these signs discourages employers from hiring someone over 50, I do agree that such signs should be banned on the grounds of stereotyping a certain group of people.

I can remember in the 50s/60s signs outside retirement homes which read 'Cripples crossing', with the same logo. My mother thought that it was alocal name until I put her right.
Since when does an employer base his choice on a roadsign? Rubbish. I can also see that the signs do stereotype but the only alternative is to remove them altogether and take the risk. A lot of elderly people (and to me that's 80+) do in fact walk like that.
No worse than 'Schoolchildren crossing'.
Have these people nothing better to do? There still isn`t a cure for cancer, IS is running riot in the Middle East, kids are raping other kids and she`s worried about a road sign.
perhaps to be a little more representative of the elderly making their way around, the sign needs to show a stooped figure on a mobility scooter being driven hell-for-leather with dead pedestrians lying in its wake.
LOL @ mushroom
Mushroom beat me to it.
Not all mobility scooters are ridden by the elderly. The rider that nearly knocked me down because the he was on his mobile was in his late thirty/early forties.
How is it discriminating inappropriately ? It is a clear indication of why the motorist should be careful, makes no reference to a specific age, and is a help to the group it relates to. It even gives those who are lacking something to moan at next, a further chance. Win all around.
Brilliant, Mushroom!!!

I am positive that there are daft people out there who have nothing better to do than to look around to find something they think needs altering. PC gone mad.
Well I'm over 50 and don't walk like that and certainly don't class myself as 'elderly' -bloody cheek! Where on earth does this stupid woman get 50 from? She doesn't look very far off 50 herself. The sign is to warn motorists there may be people crossing who are not quite as sprightly as a younger person , not warning potential employers to avoid giving over 50's jobs -really you could not make this up could you?
