Why didn't you read the last paragraphs in that report?
"A spokesman for Islamic Relief, Charity Week’s partner organisation, said Councillor Thomas ‘arrived at the venue but left before the event started’. He added: ‘What happened was an unfortunate misunderstanding for which I want to apologise to the Lord Mayor on behalf of Islamic Relief and Charity Week.
‘None of the Charity Week organisers told the Lord Mayor he could not sit with his partner, and if anyone else at the event did then they were mistaken. The Lord Mayor and his partner would have been more than welcome to enjoy this event together.’

Taking one's shoes off is completely different, I don't think it would be acceptable for the Queen to be expected to be segregated in the women's area, neither would it be for this Lord Mayor’s consort to be the only woman present in the men's area.

The charity has apologised for any possible misunderstanding and stressed they were not required to sit apart, maybe Mr. Thomas should apologise for being rude at a charity event to celebrate the raising of £730,000.
When you are a guest at a function, especially in an official capacity, you should show good manners. Even if Mr Thomas was right I'm sure his escort wasn't expected to eat outside in the cold or in the toilets. What harm would it have done to be apart for an hour or two, anyway?

What? Without going into whether Mayor Thomas had indeed been told his lady could not join him (there seems to be some debate about that) are you seriously suggesting, mushroom, that treating males and females differently based solely on their gender is acceptable in the UK? Would you feel equally at ease if only white people had been allowed upstairs and Asian people told to remain downstairs? Discriminating against people based on their race is illegal as is discriminating against somebody based on their gender. You seem to think that segregation is OK as it is part of Muslim culture but I doubt you'd be similarly disposed if a meeting was held which was seen to segregate by race.

Yes indeed. And when hosting such events, when inviting people in their official capacity, you should similarly show good manners. Whether or not there was a "misunderstanding" it seems clear that somebody told Mayor Thomas that segregation was to take place. It is not good manners to invite somebody to a function and then tell them that their partner is not allowed to fully partake because she is female. Whether this is an Islamic tradition or not it is not what happens in the UK outside of changing rooms and public toilets. If Muslims are to host events at which they invite local politicians they need to shape up and move into 21st Century Britain.
