I thought I'd ask my crossword friends this question as I consider I am more likely to receive a sensible answer .
Can you give me a word (not a phrase) that means one deliberately pretends not to know something when one actually does for the sake of snobbery?
Aside from snobbery reasons, judges often do it in court for the benefit of the jury when a word or more usually a notable person's name, a pop star for instance, comes up and the judge will ask who is that you have just referred to so an ignorant juror can understand precisely who is being discussed.
