Did Sony not actually perceive such problems, they must have been as mad as he is!!

He is a real loon, of course he wasn't going to just sit back and take it!!
As the film apparently takes the mickey out of a head of state(however much reviled)I think it was probably appropriate to withdraw it.IMO.
Based on my perception of the recent 'buddy-comedies' to have been released by the American studios, it seems a shame that this very real, and worrying, development should have been brought about by a film which is likely to be not very good.

No.

I don't think it was Sony's decision though not to show it. The theatres were the ones who said they would not go through with the Premieres.
They had little choice. If any loon had entered a theater and done something the lawsuits wold have come piling in.

Sony have not withdrawn it though, they have just not released it for Xmas. It may well still be released.

As for making a film about an assassination of a live head of state, no matter who it is, one does have to wonder if that is right. Comedy or not.

Blimey if that was the case, it is a wonder that Chaplin s 'The Great Dictator' ever made it.

They were very different times, AOG.
The land of the free and the home of the brave are looking a little less rugged, square jawed and fearless this morning.
It's a film, he's a lunatic whose enslaved eat grass to survive if reports are to be believed.
What's not to ridicule?
the Koreans didn't protest about Team America from the South Park people

Still, they're a volatile people. And if theatres won't show the film, there's not much point in releasing it.

You wonder why they're bothered about this in particular. The whole regime's been a worldwide laughing stock for decades - why get touchy about it all of a sudden?
Jack the hat. The Great Dictator was released in 1940 when we already at war with Germany and in my opinion was fair game
it's a supposed comedy film that is unlikely to amuse anyone over the age of eight, the apparent furore that it has caused is breathtaking

They probably had no choice in the circumstances. Their entire organisation had been compromised and their employees targeted. I hope they redouble their security and release a follow up :-)

It is rarely right to capitulate to terrorist threats. It just encourages them and they didn't even need to do more than threaten to get it. I hope Sony learns to regret the decision.

I was, at first, assuming it was only in the US where the cinemas got too scared to show it anyway, but it is inexcusable to be a world-wide withdrawal.

Still maybe it'll be leaked and appear world-wide on BitTorrent ?
Sony now have the opportunity to show a bit of backbone because the hackers have demanded that the film never gets released in any format http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/americas/sony-hackers-issue-new-threat-and-demand-that-film-is-never-released-in-any-format-9937137.html
In the meantime, a quiet protest is going on... at imdb the film's been rated 10/10. If the hackers had ignored the film so might everyone else have, as actual reviewers don't seem to have rated it.
