Instead of this moving forward, it seems to take two steps back each time. The inquiry was only set up to stop speculation about Conservative grandees like Lord Brittan. It was damage limitation, to stop the headlines. Now we are getting delaying tactics. Nothing will happen before The General Election, and then it will be someone elses problem.

can anyone explain to me what the article means ?

Theresa may scrap the panel - and replace it
got that....
but a statutory enquiry is better than what they have at this time innit ?

power to summon and apply oaths and so on ?
No.....I can't help.....I don't understand it either.
It's been a terrible mess from the get-go. Bringing 'victims' and victim groups on to the panel seems to have been a disaster.
I know they've been arguing amongst themselves about 'statutory status' from the beginning. I suspect it would discourage some people from giving evidence.

Can't find much info re the statutory enquiry but the Scottish government has recently announced a statutory public inquiry into the historical abuse of children in care.

Education Secretary Angel Constance said the inquiry would have powers to force witnesses to give evidence.

She said abusers would "face the full force of the law" where it brought to light evidence of crimes.

Gromit, I agree with you. It's on a top shelf waaayyy at the back and they're hoping that, in time, it will all be forgotten about. More chance for files to "go missing".
The allegation, which has been circulating for a number of months (if not years) is that a Conservative MP murdered a young boy, one of three allegedly killed by this paedophile ring.

That is a very serious allegation. I would have thought that it would be in the interests of the Conservative Party to find the truth and refute the allegation. That they would fast track any investigation to quickly clear their man. The fact that they are hampering the investigation at every turn tends to add weight to the liklihood of the allegation being true.
The government is petrified of this coming out!
In addition to the child sex abuse by very senior Tory MPs from the Thatcher cabinet there are now allegations that 2 children were murdered to shut them up. One child is said to have been run over deliberately and one strangled by a Tory MP!
This Enquiry into historic sexual abuse has been a dogs dinner from day one and its an utter disgrace.

There is a report in today's Sunday Times, that several groups, including the
National Association for People Abused in Childhood, have withdrawn their support saying that the enquiry is "not fit for purpose"

Included in the same report, on page 9, is that Labour MP John Mann, has given a list of 22 high-profile figures to the Scotland Yard that are implicated in involvement in a Westminster paedophile ring. This list includes the names of 13 former Government Ministers involved in sex parties at the Dolphin Square apartment block. This is where young boys are alleged to have been murdered in sex orgies. Senior military figures are also suspected of being involved, including the late Sir Peter Hayman, a former deputy Director of MI6, who was convicted for an act of gross indecency in a public lavatory. He was also a Member of the Paedophile Information Exchange. Suspicion forst fell on Hayman because he left a package of paedophilia-related materials on a London bus.

I hope John Mann has taken the precaution of making several copies of this list and his dossier, before submitting it to the Police, as these have had a habit of mysteriously "disappearing" when someone tries to find them a few years later. Hopefully he has hidden a copy or two somewhere MI5 can't find them.

So is it any wonder that Mrs May is having so much trouble in getting this Enquiry off the ground ? It is now obvious that dark forces are at work in the background, stymieing any investigations, in the same way that other well-known paedophiles, like Cyril Smith were helped to escape justice in the past. Its also looks increasingly likely that Savile was also protected in the same way. It would help us understand why he carried on abusing for nearly 60 years, with complete impunity.

So, if Mrs May is moving the goal posts yet again, thus further delaying any investigation, can any of us be in the slightest bit surprised ?
