It has been said here on AB that not enough prosecutions are being made for FGM in Britain, so lets hope that this is the first on many. ( many prosecutions, that is, not FGMs )

Good, good, good, good, good.... etc..
The patient had FGM in Somalia when she was six. When she was 24 years of age, 18 years later, during childbirth, the scar of FGM split. ( the narrative said that the stitches split, but after 18 years there would have been no stitches)

Now, with a gaping wound, what was the Junior Registrar to do.....leave the wound gaping OR sew it up?

He sewed it up.

I look forward to hearing the case for the defense.
I will not hold my breath until the UK stops fighting shy of upsetting the sensitivities of other cultures in this country in the name of political correctness. We do not hold with FGM, forced marriages or honour killings in our culture and neither sharia Law.. When these stone age and barbaric practices attract robust judicial penalties for infringement in this country then, and only then, should young women feel safe.
Didn't know that about this case, sqad (sorry) he has a case, but I really hope that it is stopped and that anyone carrying out the procedure is prosecuted..
I believe St Mary's Hospital, Paddington opened a wing last year for these cases of FGM at the British taxpayer's expense.

Interesting Sqad !
Link please, retrocop. And what is the purpose of this special wing?
Its not like they actually performed FGM on a woman, they repaired what had been done 18 years before. What were the doctors supposed to do? Leave the wound flapping in the wind?
According to the news report it didn't need sewing back up at all as there was no medical emergency.
He also changed his story of why he did it.
Sounds suss but I'll wait and see what the jury think.
I know it doesnt cause the same trauma but I find male genital mutilation (circumscision) just as barbaric. Why do religious people feel the need to mutilate the genitals of little kids?
There are health positives to circumcision is some cases which cannot be said for FGM.

hc4361.
Think this might be the link but there are other hospitals as well.Guys for one other and stacks more besides all over the UK
That link doesn't work, retrocop. What is the purpose of this units?
//There are health positives to circumcision is some cases which cannot be said for FGM.//
Maybe. But its not done for health reasons, its done for backward religious reasons and its done without the childs consent.

nailit....agree 100%. Circumcision is just mutilation, nothing more or less.
Seems to be a good and necessary service. From the link:

"NHS staff will not judge you and will treat you with respect. They will do their best to treat the medical problems caused by FGM. However, they do have a legal duty to protect children and will therefore take action if they think a young girl may be at risk of FGM."

To my mind, the more that is known about who has had FGM the more likely it is that their daughters can be monitored and the parents prosecuted if FGM is performed on them. Hopefully these units will also educate the women and help prevent more girls suffering like that.

When I met an Aussie girl I was surprised when she told me that the majority of Australian blokes are circumcised, nothing at all to do with religion...
//Circumcision is just mutilation, nothing more or less. //

indeed. but in these cultures, an uncircumcised female is unmarriageable. what are the family to do - permit circumcision, or condemn their child to a life on the shelf.
All male babies in North America (including Canada) used to be circumcised regardless of religion . Its becoming less popular now but my two sons had to be 'opted out' from getting cut.
