that's true, but quite why they bother is beyond me. they're forbidden from touching the children, all they're allowed to do is encourage the child to run the affected injury, etc under a running cold tap, and telephone the parents.

would you know scurvy if you saw it? I don't think I would. The more uncommon a disease (never mind if it was well known a few centuries ago), the less lay people will recognise it.

Sad story, but there was a young man on TV reently who'd never eaten an apple in his life. No fruit = no vit D = scurvy

In reception the things were weighed for some national survey thing, they did a hearing test and sight test. Pretty sure that is all the contact that the children around here get with a 'school nurse' until injections when they're about 14.

We don't have any school nurses here. No hearing, sight, weight, jabs. All done by GP surgery now-as I think they should be.

I do remember now my youngest being weighed for the national survey thingy. Then I received a letter telling me he was overweight! He's not over weight.

A poor little boy has died and all some on here can say is 'well look at the parents' -disgusting. For all you know he may have had some medical condition that stopped him taking up vitamins -try looking up 'Malabsorption' before you disrespect these poor parents who are more than likely devastated by the loss of their son. Unbelievable.

Almost paralleled by an 1840s case I came across. A child that had been a healthy baby (by standards of day) seemed to dwindle, then die. As many children did then. Parents had penny insurance club going, and were duly paid. Neighbours rushed to denounce them as callous murderers.

It's pretty poor to see a sophisticated 21st century online community whee the opening posts of the thread couldn't wait to stick the boot in.

We don't have all the evidence, and as PP points out, possibly never will.

Boxtops -you don't get vit D from fruit. The main source is Sunlight,oily fish and cereals.

He died in Dec 2011. I assume a post mortem has already been carried out.

Retro......i have never heard of a Absorption Syndrome that just picks out, selectively,Vitamin C.

There would be other more obvious manifestations of malabsorption such as intractable diarrhea....signs of B12 deficiency, electrolye upsets.

Malabsorption........??.......naaaah!

Commonest things occur commonest......VitC defy....DIETARY.
