1) Socialists live in the 19th Century and believe the 'Toff' can and should pay. This of course translates to the lower middle classes now (or anyone who dares better themselves in other words) since the Toffs were robbed of their brass years ago.
2) Sturgeon is fairly clueless on the running of a large economy. She is trying to make an impression with the sweaties who, by and large, are socialists.
I'm afraid it is a loose/loose situation for Ed. She has probably firghtened off quite a few moderate voters who may have been swayed to labour. The one think that is not a problem is the UK Economy so it is a very destructive tactic to take
