I'm not favouring the guilty parties but if every case results in money being paid out to the victims surely there will be more false accusations popping up against these celebrities for something that 'happened' 30 years ago
Panky...I'm a bit on the fence. I'm a victim of abuse and I wouldn't want to touch the dirty money. It's too deep a subject though. People cope differently, just human nature. A life ruined might be enhanced with money. You'd have to know the people involved, and we don't.
Ummmm a few years back Arthur Mullard, a famous comedy actor back in the 70's / 80's died and left an estate worth around £360k, his daughter claimed that he had sexually abused her for years and driven her mother to suicide and she didn't want his money so I can understand your point

//By contrast, his fellow inmates only earn £7 per hour doing menial chores.//
Are you kidding? I would be lucky to have earned that in a WEEK, when I was inside. I would be lucky to earn that on the outside.....
I don't believe that the majority of these cases are about money. To some the money will be a bonus (and why not) but to others it's irrelevant....a prison sentence would suffice.
I think it's how each person copes. I would guess that most drug addicts and alcoholics have a back story.
Its immaterial how much someone in prison has anyway. I remember reading years ago in the press, how much Myra Hindley had in her prison account It was accompanied with much indignation . It doesnt make a blind bit of difference because they cant spend it. Every prisoner (immaterial of how much money they have) is only allowed to spend so much per week.
You/they apply to a court and it has to be shown the sum payable is from naughty activity.
/That's not strictly true - Hall may be ruined by the compensation claims from his victims, but not from operation yewtree itself. //
Hall would have a defence bill of in excess £100 000 which would be enough to ruin him - didnt someone have to sell their London house to pay for their lawyers
Oh and if you are acquitted - you never get costs in these cases
Rolf Harris had a relationship for years with the woman who reported him in the first instance. He should have paid her the money that she asked him for when she wanted to start her animal sanctuary.'Pay up or my brother will go to the police'. Then he probably wouldn't be in prison now. I don't think a person should have to pay twice for their offences (prison and financial rewards)unless the crime involved embezzlement or similar offences. His family still have to survive and his financial investments should be turned over to them.
