she put her name forward to the local association went through the process and got the nomination, then bottled it. Could have withdrawn at any stage but waited to the last minute to upset the whole apple cart and make the local association look like the omni shambles they are. No doubt central office will also be squirming on this, not to mention the afore mention treacherous GG. So yes awfull woman is about right. OK - but you are working on a supposition, rather than necessarily having a balanced set of facts on which to draw your conclusion, so she may have misjudged the situation, but personally, I think 'awful' is maybe a bit strong - ?

Also I think Women only lists are a travesty for democracy as they deny 50% of the population from standing in their own constituency!

There's no indication in that link that the list was women only by design. I am not sure that that is allowed?

... but surely that means that all people on the short list were women, not that men had been precluded from putting themselves forward. Must admit though, that in a place like Bradford with a high Muslim population, it does seem a bit odd.

Jackdaw. It's still discrimination if you chose prospective candidates by their sex rather than ability. labour has been having Women Only Shortlists for quite a while now. I remember Jacqui Smith saying she was proud to have been selected from a Women Only Short List. Frankly I would have been embarrassed by having ruled out half the population.
