I am not sure to whom you refer - the plane spotters or the authorities.

The plane spotters will be unaware that they have transgressed in any way, the authorities will have seen their behaviour as suspicious.

Hopefully everything will be sorted out quickly, and the individuals can be released and return home.
You would have to be very naive to not realise that your behaviour could be construed as suspicious in that particular country.
visiting a Middle Eastern country. Taking notes of aircraft and using a telescope. What could possibly go wrong?
Driving past many airbases in this country there are signs forbidding photography other than in designated areas, it's not just in other countries. In answer to your question, yes they are as dim as you think they are and tax-payers money will have to be wasted on Consular support to get them home.
Would it have been difficult to check before going? Possibly not.

These are idiots indeed. This case does have a precedent
going back to 2001. I am aware of this and I am no longer a plane spotter.

I could supply a few more links of idiots being arrested in other countries for taking photographs in sensitive areas.

This one for instance.

Do they never learn ?
That's why I stick to buses, much safer.
Run if you see a pink one coming, Talbot.
I see no ships.
