Thatcher uses to hurl 'frit' at her political opponents. Now one of her successors is facing the same accusation.

Had to look that up. Lincolnshire expression it seems. For those who aren't familiar is is apparently meaning the same as frightened. And there was me thinking he was being called an Irish fruit.
That article is out of date.
It always seemed unlikely that Cameron was "frit" of Farage. And sure enough the Tories have agreed to be in the multi-party debate but not the Miliband head-to-head. Presumably because the Greens haven't been invited :-)
They might as well give Cameron a gun and put a big target on his foot
Sandy - only an irishman could marvel how words people have said come back to haunt people - and they're different people !

erm No I think it is intentional use to irritate, excoriate

Words DO come back to haunt - AOG was insistent that innocent remains innocent until proven guilty and then was ready to pull out the fingers nails of Jihadi John and bomb civilians

and our dear pinko wet Andy H reproved me for dragging in the Nazi party in one thread and demanded grovelliing apologies from me and then in another thread did the VERY same thing !

and on pointing this out with a very LOUD irony klaxon, I got no response at all.....oh yes there was - And H ( bless!) told me to keep my thoughts to myself

Yes I noticed Nige's sudden aversion to numbers in his capping sound bites
OG - oh keep awake during elections no matter how hard it may be !

everyone knows that frit doesnt come from 'afrit' arabic for devil

elections are interesting - Prescott hitting people and Klitschlo ( hes an Eastern European politician and boxer ) NOT hitting people...
One can hardly be haunted by someone else's words, sandy, but then you knew that.
Ichi. It was always about Farage. You think he's bothered about Miliband?Lol.
I've said all along he should do the one on one with Ed and not the other circus. I can't believe he's "frit" of Ed, he can't beat Myleene Klass!
There is nothing to be gained for the Prime Minister from these debates and everything to lose.
The 2010 ones almost certainly elevated the LibDems at the expense of Labour and resulted in the coalition.

By participating in a 'debate' with up to seven other leaders, means each leader will perhaps have only 5 minutes of talk time in total. Which means there will be no proper answers, just a splatter gun of soundbites.

I hope no one takes up this final offer because it won't be worth watching.
if Cameron is not bothered about Miliband why does he not want to debate with him? The answer is as already stated: the Tories have assessed they have nothing to gain and everything to lose.
As things stand they are still going to be there with Farage and others The multi party debates will hopefully still take place. The Tories may still not be there though. They hope that their 'final offer' will be unacceptable and they can pull out. Additionally insisting on a March date leaves little time if the DUP decide to take legal action to get involved. And Cameron may hope the DUP may remember his thoughtfulness towards them when the coalition partners are being negotiated should it come to that :-)

And also it would be before the tory party manifesto is made public , thereby avoiding it being scrutinised and attacked in the debate .

Cameron made a big thing at the despatch box accusing the previous prime minister of running scared about taking part in the debate in 1990 .

Who is running scared now ?
not fear bazille, logic, you explained it yourself, nothing to gain.
