It seems easy enough to get a judgement against a rogue trader, particularly when they offer no defence, but what are the chances that any of the people featured in this TV programme ever see any of their money.

I've not seen the TV programme but I get your point. There are ways of enforcing and it is not too difficult to recoup relatively small amounts of money. It is something any person must consider before suing, is it worth it? If the Defendant is a man of straw, probably not. Sometimes, it is not worth throwing good money after bad.
Good point Bam Bam - nice to see you posting

For the recovery of debt - you need to see The Sheriffs program

In all the small claims I have sued, there has always been a defence.
I regard default judgement as an unattainable luxury

Now the other reason why you might bring a case is to screw up their credit.... One surprised ex-tenant found he couldnt get back onto a professional register ( and earn more moolah ) three years later unless he paid off a debt to me which he had specifically told me to get ficked over. Unphased he started off with a very prettily expressed apology over his behaviour !
