He wasn't elected to the role, he was foisted on the Middle-east by the US, EU and Russia who wanted to keep him out of mischief.
He was been ineffective on the role, but I'm not sure anyone else could have done any better considering the hatred either side have for the other.

Let's face it , look how long this conflict been going on - noone over the years has been able to bring peace to the two sides .
