Long Term Economic Plan
11 Answers
Milliband and Balls keep banging on and on (and on) about their "Long Term Economic Plan" but what exactly is it? Can it be described concisely?
If not, then choose your favourite part and say why you like it or why you think their underlying economic theory is correct, not just ideologically but for this country, this date and this level of debt.

Economic planning is a Good Thing but they dont want to use the phrase 5 year plan - too dated and too Stalinist
The Wilson govt did institute a five year plan which was the usual predictable socialist disaster - abandoned 1971 I think

Whoever wins the election, Labour or Conservative, they will have very little control of the economy. Power was handed over to the free markets in the 1980s and will never return to the Government.
At the most, the Government can tinker around the edges, but whether we encounter boom or bust is out of their hands. Global forces, which Whitehall cannot contain or influence will shape our future. The boom under Blair was not due to anything they did, the rest of the world was booming. The Crash of 2008 was not their fault, it was worldwide. The years of Stagnation under the coalition have been replicated in other western countries.
Labour and Conservative may promise a prosperous future under their stewardship, but really they do not know. Whatever they plan, the economy will march to a different tune. Deflation, an oil war, EuroZone crisis, another crash, there are thousands of things, beyond their control, that will knock them off course.

I have the election pamphlet from the Salford Labour candidate.
Her headings are
Saving our NHS - spending on 20000 more nurses, 8000 more GPs, 5000 more home workers etc
Employment - Raise Minimum wage to £8, ban zero hour contracts. No savings here
Homes - spending on 200000 new homes by 2020.
Bedroom tax - spending to scrap it
The Economy - soending on an unspecified lower starting point for Income Tax
She will pay for it by a tobacco levy, a mansion tax, a tax avoidance clampdown and reversing the "tax cut for millionaires"
Sorry, Rebecca - just doesn't add up for me
And where's the picture of you with Ed Milliband?
No, I wouldn't want one either...
Salford's a safe seat. Pin a red rosette on a pig and it will be elected is the local wisdom
