Within the 28-member European Union – never mind the world – there are five countries with a population similar to Scotland’s; ie between about 4 and 7 million. They are Bulgaria, Croatia, Denmark, Ireland and Slovakia. In addition, there are several much smaller nations which also seem to manage independence perfectly adequately; ie Cyprus, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta and Slovenia.
In the first group above, apart possibly from Denmark, how many depend on oil for survival? I believe I can confidently say that none of the countries in the second group does so. In total, this amounts to more than one third of all EU countries, none of which depends on oil.
Do you seriously contend that Scotland alone would be incapable of doing the same? The world beats a path to its doorstep for whisky, currently one of the top five export earners for the WHOLE of the UK. Its history and tourism are also major earners. Certainly, a booming oil-price would be a wonderful bonus, providing a multitude of benefits, but is it a necessity in order to be independent? Clearly not!
