It has to be this way, these are not asylum seekers they are economic migrants from all over Africa/Asia.
The EU should send them back as soon as possible to send the message they are not wanted.
The UK will still have the problem even if we don't let them in on a quota. Other EU countries will let them in , give them EU citizenship and over here they will come. Which is the stated aim of many coming over the Med.
We need to get out of the HRA and out of the EU. Only way to control our borders.

Economic migrants aren't our only problem. These boats provide a perfect opportunity for IS who are already in Libya and have vowed to attack Europe, to invade the whole continent by stealth. The BBC reported back in February …

The rescue operation off Italy has been going on for many, many months. The majority of those currently turning the port of Calais into a cess-pit have arrived via the Med. They are quickly ushered across the Italian border into France and from there it is all points north for them. So it is very likely that some currently in Calais have been rescued.
It is widely acknowledged that many illegals make it to the UK from Calais every month. So it is equally likely that a number of them came via the Med and had to be rescued. So the answer is almost certainly more than none.

The salient point in Mrs May's comments concern the addressing of the issues that cause economic migration.
If the countries involved can have their own economic issues addressed, it will reduce and eventually eradicate the need for economic migration - and that is the root of the whole issue.
In the mean time, I would support strenuous location and prosecution of the trafficking gangs, with their boats destroyed as a matter of course.
