i didn't notice that abolition of the monarchy was a central plank of the manifesto of any party at the last election, mainstream or otherwise. where's the massive groundswell of opinion for this change, from anybody? even those who are the polar opposite of the alleged royalists you've identified as DM readers are currently silent on the matter.....

A very one sided opinion, retrochic.
A history of Ireland shows that a peaceful country was conquered by a bully of a neighbour using terror tactics very successfully to subjugate the people.
The meeting today should be applauded as another step in the right direction to a friendly relationship between the two countries.
I am all for progress!

Pete65 My opinion is only one-side with regards to Gerry Adams personally. I'm aware of the atrocities committed in the dispossession of Ireland and subsequent Rebellions etc. The OP was commenting on a specific meeting of GA and Prince Charles and my comment merely suggested he was not worthy of a handshake. IMHO he should never be allowed on English soil.
