and he has a sense of History
IN 192x - George V told Lloyd George I think
that he didnt want to meet and sign a treaty with the Soviets who had shot his cousins - I dont think it can be Brest Litovsk
and LG said O yes yes my liege I will do it myself !
and so the monarch lost by voluntary giving up his right to conclude treaties. You may have wondered why heads of state sign treaties except the UK
I am sure charly boy is aware of this - times change of course

The sooner this archaic system of succession ends, the better. This country needs to pull itself into the 21st century and have an elected a Head of State, and before all you DM reading, blue rinse middle Englanders jump on the band wagon, I'm not suggesting President Blair, more the Irish system where the HoS holds no political sway.
Let Liz see out her days as queen, then abolish the monarchy and replace it with a Republic and stop this freeloading family swaning off round the world on a permanent jolly at our expense.
Rant over!

i didn't notice that abolition of the monarchy was a central plank of the manifesto of any party at the last election, mainstream or otherwise. where's the massive groundswell of opinion for this change, from anybody? even those who are the polar opposite of the alleged royalists you've identified as DM readers are currently silent on the matter.....

Gerry Adams is an Evil lump of excrement still trying to steal the history of Ireland. He has committed and condoned terrible acts of violence and Terror as leader of Sinn Fein (and the IRA who in my opinion are one and the same) on both Military and Civilians . Prince Charles should think about the family of Jean McConville and her ten orphaned children before he shakes the hand of this personification of evil. Some things should not be forgiven. Would he shake the hand of the Lockerbie bomber?
A very one sided opinion, retrochic.
A history of Ireland shows that a peaceful country was conquered by a bully of a neighbour using terror tactics very successfully to subjugate the people.
The meeting today should be applauded as another step in the right direction to a friendly relationship between the two countries.
I am all for progress!

Pete65 My opinion is only one-side with regards to Gerry Adams personally. I'm aware of the atrocities committed in the dispossession of Ireland and subsequent Rebellions etc. The OP was commenting on a specific meeting of GA and Prince Charles and my comment merely suggested he was not worthy of a handshake. IMHO he should never be allowed on English soil.
