Does it make sense to deprive our police of cash and resources so as to provide foreign countries with money to enlarge their police forces.

/// According to The Sun, in the last four years Britain's taxpayers have helped fund 23 new police stations in Congo, while 29 police stations have been forced to close in Lancashire alone in the same period, with the number of officers cut by 700. ///

The excuse being,

/// A Government spokesman said: 'It is firmly in Britain's interests to support police and legal services in developing countries since it helps tackle the root causes of problems that affect us here, including crime, corruption and extremism.' ///

Be cheaper not to allow foreign criminals into this country in the first place.

"since it helps tackle the root causes of problems that affect us here"

yeah, of course it does......
Most of the G20 club of wealthy nations have committed themselves to giving 0.7% of their GDP as aid for developing nations. The UK has signed up to this. This Conservative Government is not going to ditch that policy.

The Home Office gets £9billion annually. It has decided to cut how much money police forces are allocated which means numbers of polucing are being drastically reduced. They point to falling crime statistics to justify the cut. We may not like a reduction in police numbers, but it is up to the Home Office how it distributes its budget.

The Overseas Aid budget is allocated by a completely different Government department. It would be daft to tell it not to fund a policeman in Africa because the Home Office are cutting police here due to falling crime.
I see that as more of a justification than an excuse. Of course we prioritise our own country's police force; but that does not mean we should be ignoring opportunities to make the world a safer better place. It's keeping a reasonable balance on what is spent where that is important.

And yes of course, immigration should be better managed. Never easy though is it. Nor will immigration stop criminal and/or terrorist activity from occurring elsewhere, and affecting all including ourselves.
Help police other countries if we have spare cash, but we havent, and certainly not at the expense of our own police. Its madness. !

Are you sure that the Home Office only gets £9billion annually???
Sp1814,

Be ause of budget cuts, the figure is even less....

// The Home Office will make 27 per cent cuts in real terms, with its budget falling from £10.8 billion this year to £8.4 billion in 2014-15. //

Police are figments of someone's imagination

Yes, and we're the only fools who go beyond 'commitment'.
Giving twice as much as our nearest rivals, percentage wise, and 3,4,5 times as much as most.
The government chooses to do that Svejk if that's the case.
It's a tory government so who is at fault?
Totally out of touch politicians, in my opinion. And, incidentally, it was the Labour Government that signed up to the 0.7%. Although this shower are quite happy to go on throwing our grandchildren's money down the drain.
The labour government was over 5 years ago.
The current government has chosen to pay above the odds for all that time and continues to do so.
This isn't a labour issue Svejk, much as you would like it to be.
Your choice of government happily does this while squeezing the resources of its own people.

Hoy! Less of the 'your choice of Government'. I didn't vote for them. And I made it quite clear that while it was Labour that signed us up to the 0.7%, this Government seem quite happy to continue it. There's really no need to try twisting what I say, frog.
"Are you coming out to the Bbq in the sunshine so we can grab some beers, have good conversation and pick up some chicks?"

"No,I'm going to stay in hunched over my computer and scour every newspaper on the globe to find something about foreigners to be enraged about instead"
To answer your question yes we should help others as it will benefit us in the long term.
It's been raining here, Broseph. Anyway, you'll find such fleeting pleasures wane when you grow up.
