And we all know how difficult it is to get a NI Number?

/// But UK citizens are a free people not numbers to be State controlled/monitored. ///
Who the heck told you that OG?
We are monitored from the cradle to the grave.
You are registered when born, and throughout life you are given a NI Number, a NH number, a Driving licence complete with you photo, a passport and most companies insist that you carry around your neck an ID pass, periodically you are asked to provide information on your household for election purposes, and also on Censor forms, then when one finely pops their clogs a death certificate must be drawn up, so that they can then finely draw a pencil through your name.

Yes 100% wholeheartedly the UK should have identity cards -as long as you don't have to pay for them. It would solve so many issues of identity not everyone drives or has a passport. They should be linked to either your N.I. number (or equivalent in Europe). I can't see the argument of 'Big Brother watching you' Its a card with your photo on thats all.
World of difference AOG. Were it true the rational some put forward for carrying papers would disappear and you'd not be apparently supporting this appalling imposition on the people.
Everyone needs permission for some things. For example you can't have untaught idiots causing havoc on the roads. ID to get to secure places is obviously reasonable. Having to have the State say it's ok for you to exist, and only if you have the card, is something else entirely.

I cannot believe that anyone still thinks ID cards would be an intrusion.
People obsessively use their mobile phones to create a record of their movements ... where they are, where they were before, who they are with, who they are phoning and texting. They even broadcast their thoughts on so-called social media. The GPS in their phones stores a record everywhere they have been, on a big algorithmically-monitoring hard drive in America that they like to call the "Cloud".
If they needed to, the authorities could check on everywhere you have been this month, and whom you were with, which shops you were in, and how much you spent, and how fast you drove your car on the way home (unless you have a lead-lined box for your phone).
They could look at where you are now, what was the last thing you Googled, and who was the last person you texted.
And people still worry about carrying an ID card?
Seriously??

OG the State already tells you you can't travel if you don't have a passport, you can't get a pension or healthcare if you don't have a N.I. number, you can't legally drive on public roads if you don't have a licence. I can't see any difference . In Canada everyone has a SIN card (social insurance number) with a photo -its no big deal.
I have never understood the opposition to ID Cards. We need a passport to go abroad on holiday, I need to show my Library Card and Bus Pass, if I want to borrow a book or travel by bus. I have to show my Company ID whenever I work, and if a Policeman asks for my driving licence, I need to have one to show him.
I could probably find more examples, so just what is wrong with a British ID Card ?

Strange, what I find difficult to believe is the support for more State control. Did the Stasi not give folk any clue as to the evil being allowed to be controlled by the Stat brings ? Or maybe give the citizens cake and they'll be eager for any control.
Folk opt willingly to give the information they wish to. Again a massive difference. Those who have no desire for privacy and give too much may end up regretting it.
Even if it were true that the authorities could tell exactly where you have been (and it clearly isn’t or all crime would be cleared up) that is no excuse for giving more out. It's like telling a thief, of you have stolen my pencil, here take all my bank accounts and credit cards as well then.
I despair at today's attitudes. Fool enough folk and this sort of stuff gets inflicted on us all marring everyone's life. But it seems that’s what some actually want.

I've given you a number here already. Demolished any suggestion that they do anything useful, or that they give you something more than you already have. As is demonstrated by the number of folk pointing out they already have things that can identify them if the need arises. This sort of issue is exactly why I stopped considering the Labour Party worth considering voting for. And until they make it quite clear they have stopped being control freaks and mean it, they will remain that way.
As part of my work vetting procedure I have been thoroughly checked out, including my Husband, parents and siblings (step-siblings too), I consider myself an open book. Being monitored and reviewed every five years is my 'normal'. As a consequence of this I have absolutely no issue with carrying an ID card, some members of my extended family took great offence at being 'investigated' by the authorities as part of my vetting........I savoured their discomfort ;-)
