/// Mr Chishti, the Tory MP for Gillingham and Rainham, said Muslims are offended by the use of the word 'Islamic', as they do not consider the bloodthirsty group representative of their faith. ///

/// The Prime Minister - who calls the group 'ISIL' - said Muslims would 'recoil' at the phrase being used to justify the 'perversion of a great religion'. ///

Why all this kow-towing towards Islam and the Muslims?

"Said term was offensive to Muslims and gave group legitimacy

first part of that statement i couldnt give a toss about, let them be offended, its what they seem to do best.......
I thought they always prefaced it by saying 'so called', which is subtly derogatory.
"Daesh" would be better. I don't understand the argument that calling it that would be seen as supporting them. The MPLA, for example were always referred to as that despite the fact that their popularity and commitment to liberation were doubtless seen in their eyes only. And so on.
Nor do I understand why the PM and co are - yet again - targeting the BBC over what in all honesty is a pretty trivial matter.
Anyway, the good old BBC has stood up to those pesky Tory Islam-lovers. I think that deserves a round of applause from Mail towers. Or is that esteemed organ's allegiance to the Tory party stronger than that :-)
// Muslims would 'recoil' at the phrase being used to justify the 'perversion of a great religion'. ///

Pity they dont recoil enough to grass up the perpetrators.
Which Muslims? I can think of several who aren't offended.
It is a self proclaimed name so we have to use it.

It is neither Islamic nor a State. But it is their name even though it is wholly inappropriate.
There was a point when they went from ISIL to IS wasn't there? Some sort of rebranding excercise. I remember the name changing then and felt confused as to why news agenecies were using the new branding.

As Zacs says - it's usually the "so called" Islamic state, so I would suggest this is a fine comprimise?

They do need to be called something I suppose.

There was confusion - ISIL and ISIS were the same thing. The rebrand simplifies things. Though it is not a State, it is what they are striving for.
Does it really matter ?

We all know who and what is being referred to surely ? A rose by any name still has thorns.
What's the problem? That's what they call themselves isn't it? I agree with zacs -master.
Probably right they are neither really Islamic or a state so we`ll have to call them something else. Answers below - the ones that get past the censor anyway.....
Jizlamic hate.
I prefer Zac's take on this.
// Why all this kow-towing //

crawling or bowing down to ........ kowtowing should be reserved for chinese....

just got it - islamic state is offensive to muslims coz the state is nothing like islamic. islam as AOG will be the first to point out is arabic for peace

a bit like describing the IRA as Roman Catholic - oops not many english roman catholics agreed with that.

// the Prime Minister - who calls the group 'ISIL' - said Muslims would 'recoil' at the phrase being used to justify the 'perversion of a great religion'.//

isnt that a bit jesuitical ? the prime minister clearly is too busy to realise that ISIL stands for " Islamic State ( oops ) of Iraq and Lebanon "

Why not call a spade a spade, aren't they all Muslims?

Then why did you separate them in the last sentence of your OP?
