I'd go for a Fiat Punto - just the basic 1.1 model the 60s. Its got loads of space, a perky little engine and although the ride is a little choppy going round corners, its generally a super little car that'll hit 100+ on the motorway, and it looks great too. You can pick up a second hand one, say an n-reg with 40,000 miles for 2300+. There shouldn't be any problems with body work for at least ten years as its all galvinised. I had one for a year, the only thing to look out for is the gear box - traditionally a bit dodgy on all Fiats.
