Pity some countries are not so protective of their territorial waters when it comes to the illegal incursion of them from African vessels.
And before the usual crew start with their " oh so you would like to see innocent women and children fired upon would you" my answer is no.
This is just an illustration of what some countries will do to protect their territorial waters, 'YET'.....
See where I am coming from?

No it isn't. The Spanish Customs were illegally in Gibraltan waters and NOT protecting Spanish waters. The vessel which they illegally fired upon was not a threat, but a pleasure cruiser.
It is posturing for the Spanish public. Propaganda only. We Brots should not be admiring the Spanish, we should be condemning them.

/// However, seeing the danger migrants put themselves in order to escape either war, disease or collapsed economies - I don't think the possibility of being fired on would stop them. ///
As I purposely tried to point out, none least of all myself is suggesting that they should be fired upon.
Neither should we be the home for Africa's potential disease victims, or economic refugees, and regarding the war zones, most who chose to flee their families are young men who should be staying in Africa fighting to improve their situations.
Why come to Europe anyway, isn't Africa a very large continent, surely they could find countries there more fitting with their customs and heritage, than the white man's countries who they hate so much.

Okay - I didn't realise this was going to be one of those threads.
I was just trying to answer the question you raised. From your subsequent post, I think this might get a little...fraught.
From what I've seen on news pictures, there seems to be quite a mix of people coming over to Europe...not just young men. I've not read up on specific demographics of the migrants - so it's difficult to determine their routes, but I think you should keep in mind that all we are currently seeing is inward migration to Europe. There is also significant migration within the African continent (obviously this isn't something that gets much traction in our press, because understandably - it's not really newsworthy).
I will see if I can dig out any stats on that.
Regarding your assertion that Africans hate white countries. I think that might be an example of a sweeping generalisation based on race.

This is not a question of whether or not the Spaniards were acting illegally, this is about how countries are so keen to protect their territorial waters just the same as their air-space for example.
But it seems in the case of this influx of so called refugees, these counties don't care 'two hoots' for the invasion of their territorial waters, in fact they will even enter other's territorial waters so as to pick them up and ferry them to Europe.

I'm glad you brought up the question of African migration to Europe. I would never have thought about it, and whether it was as proportionally insignificant in terms of intra-continental African migration.
Here's what I've found:
"A marked feature of movement of people across the globe is that at least half of it takes place within the same continent while the other half is transcontinental, except for emigrants from Latin America where the majority ended up in North America (Table 3)8. For Africa, the intra- Africa emigration rate is about 52% which is lower than Europe (59%) and Asia (54.7%). However, for countries from Sub Saharan Africa this figure is close to 65%, which represents the largest intra-continental or south-south movement of people in the world."

Interesting figures sp, but that doesn't answer the question of why these particular Africans choose at a very large financial cost, to suffer the hardships and possible deaths of themselves, their women folk and their small children, by attempting to cross the Mediterranean sea, when they could safely move to another African country?

I would have to refer you to the report I linked to. There are many different reasons behind both intercontinental and intra-continental migration.
For instance with refugees, it may be that the routes to safe countries in Africa may pass through extremely dangerous territories. Those fleeing would have an idea of these territories, but may have no idea of the dangers facing them by crossing the Med. indeed, they may not even know the distances they are travelling.
Desperation is not the best progenator of rational decision-making.
