As I mentioned earlier, the uphill battle is not just with the huge amount of guns in circulation, it is the ‘frontier’ mentality in America which continues to believe that owning a gun is a right.
It is a right, under the law, but with rights come responsibilities, and it is here that the entire ethos falls down.
The mind-set that Americans should be able to protect themselves with guns is deeply embedded, and whereas virtually every other aspect of the culture that laid down the right in the first place has evolved out of recognition, this particular idea remains steadfast.

In the decade following the Labor party's election and banning of handguns in 1997, the number of recorded violent attacks in the U.K. soared by 77% to 1.2 million in '07.

The residential burglary rate dropped 89% in Kennesaw as compared to 10.4% in the rest of the State of Georgia. No-one can possibly believe that allowing more violent and dangerous weapons into society makes that society safer as a result. Americans seem to have this concept of "so long as the right people has guns it keeps the wrong people in check" -- but this makes the, often very deadly, mistake of assuming that good people stay good, when in fact often they can just snap. Give someone who snaps a gun and they can do far, far more damage than without.
All the same, nothing will change. In part because, sadly, with guns now already out there it is unlikely that banning guns will be all that effective. In part also, because some people insist on spreading the illusion that guns make people safer. But if the guy you are trying to defend yourself from also has a gun then all that's happened is that both people have gained the same advantage, and in relative terms nothing has changed really.
All the same, nothing will change. In part because, sadly, with guns now already out there it is unlikely that banning guns will be all that effective. In part also, because some people insist on spreading the illusion that guns make people safer.
