Four Months In Jail For Stealing Groceries Worth $5
A mentally ill man stole $5 worth of groceries, went to jail and died of 'natural causes' four month later.
Do you find this story at least...perplexing?
What would bail be for such a trivial crime?

I wondered why you entered a minor news story all the way from the USA, and then I saw the photo. Agenda, Fits, springs to mind.

SP ....his colour, of course, has nothing to do with this story.
We don't know all the details but, on the face of it, a jail sentence for stealing items of such low worth seems draconian. The fact that he is also mentally ill, makes me despair for American justice.
I am reminded of a case a few years back, when a young man, in Florida I recall, was sentenced to death, for a murder committed when he was a child. This young man was also mentally ill.
The official put up for the interview was asked was it right that somebody who was mentally ill should be on Death Row, and he replied that they intended to make him better, before executing him.
Chilling at the very least.

Yes AOG - I freely confirm that I have an agenda to push here...but you may find it odd that the most shocking element of the story (and this is why I've raised it), is that someone could spend four months in jail for such a trivial crime, rather than the fact he was black.
If you click on my userid and look at my last forty published questions, you will see that I post on a wide range of subjects, governed by the fact that I really don't have some hidden agenda.
Now look at your last forty published questions.
Some might draw the conclusion that perhaps you might be more 'agenda led' than me.
Anyway - back to the question...don't you find the story strange? I couldn't imagine our system breaking down so badly.
Reading the story, my first thought was "If they couldn't get him into one state run medical facility, why not try one further afield?"

The story is not that far different from the situation in the UK. Our Psychiatric services cannot cope with mental patients found wandering abroad. No mental institutions left.No beds so they languish in a police station cell. The police are now becoming social workers and are not qualified to look after mental care issues.
Just why we have to read of problems in the US on this subject I cannot see. We have these problems which are well reported in our own press.

Yes a very sad story, no matter what his colour.
But why did you pick out this particular small news story which took place way over the Atlantic, when has retrocop has already pointed out there are many such mental issue stories in our own country?
Perhaps not the harsh criminal conviction I admit, but even for those you have only to see what kind of justice takes place in the Middle East, throwing persons from off tall buildings for example, their only crime? Being homosexual.

I'm almost certain that I don't need to justify to you why I chose this story, in the same way that I don't make you justify your many posts you put up to write derogatory (your words - remember the Mandela thread) to whichever minority you wish to bash.
The point about this story is that it's shocking.
Let's try not to make it all about race.
And please try not to pretend that you care about the lives of gay people in the Middle East. Someone who so regularly posts threads to *** off gay people has no right to use gay people to further his own agenda.

I still maintain that you would not have posted this thread if it had been about a white person.
If you can make up reasons why I particularly posted certain threads, why can't I make similar accusations against you?
Now we get to this yet another unfounded accusation from you.
/// Someone who so regularly posts threads to *** off gay people has no right to use gay people to further his own agenda. ///
Please be good enough to supply me with proof of this accusation?

Put yourself in my shoes and try to work out how much I care.
Same must go with you I assume. When people accuse you of being anti-gay, or a bigot - it really doesn't mean anything because the people making the accusations are only doing so based on a very limited knowledge of you as a person.
So what if every time you post something about gays or blacks its to attack us in one form or another. That in itself doesn't make you a complete hypocritical bigot. It might just be that you recognise what generates a debate in the News section, and not because you believe every thing you post.
Same with others - just because you suspect something, does not make it true.
I'm sure we must agree on that...

I did not include the following, where it seems you were honestly asking a question, rather than using AB to further your agenda:

Don’t take that as a criticism - when I am posting something to further my liberal (small ‘L’) agenda, I readily admit it.
Most people on AB have an agenda, be it political or social. It’s just good manners (and a sign of maturity) to accept this of others and ourselves. If you have an agenda which is to be critical of minorities, then so be it.
Apologies if you feel I’ve mischaracterised you, but just like the rap and barbecue loving potential black neighbours you fear - sometimes assumptions can be wrong.
