Geography isn't my strong point, TheChair, but Somalia has a growing movie industry, and we have certainly thrown plenty of money in their direction!

South Africa, who this story is primarily about, has a higher GDP than Ireland, Denmark, Finland, but you wouldn't post that they should not buy television programmes.

When you say "they", which countries are you referring to?

I ask, because only South Africa is listed specifically, and as Gromit says, the country has a fairly decent GDP.

But a general point is this - there are few countries that don't have serious poverty issues.

Brazil for instance has massive poverty, but it also has a large population who earn enough to buy consumer goods.

Even in the UK - we have people sleeping rough and we have an ever expanding number of food banks.

Should we too stop buying iPhones and watching Antiques Roadshow until absolutely everyone is off the streets?

To those questioning my geography learnings.

It refers to sub-Saharan Africa, which consists of very many countries on the continent of Africa, south of the Sahara, South Africa being at the southern most part.

I am not aware that the UK, has received billions upon billions of pounds sent to them by other countries and various charities over the decades.

Unless you know which countries in sub-Saharan Africa this article refers to, your question can only hang in mid air.

If the report referred to all countries in the region, then you might have a point - as it is, there's no way of telling whether any of the countries this report refers to are claimants of aid.

ex-Commonwealth Countries will get monies by the very fact of their association to the Empire. But I am not sure how many of those are sub-Saharan, and the subject of this report, if any. A bit of a dud question.
