When you say "they", which countries are you referring to?
I ask, because only South Africa is listed specifically, and as Gromit says, the country has a fairly decent GDP.
But a general point is this - there are few countries that don't have serious poverty issues.
Brazil for instance has massive poverty, but it also has a large population who earn enough to buy consumer goods.
Even in the UK - we have people sleeping rough and we have an ever expanding number of food banks.
Should we too stop buying iPhones and watching Antiques Roadshow until absolutely everyone is off the streets?
