He promised "transitional help" for those affected after his party was defeated twice in the House of Lords.

But would he have listened this time yesterday ?

The steel workers being made redundant has little to do with this issue, Sir O. But since the question has been asked, one of the reasons Germany's steel industry is more viable than the UK's is that the cost of energy in Germany is considerably lower - a direct consequence of the present and previous governments' policies of imposing punative energy taxes to support unviable energy production methods.

But back to tax credits, there is no doubt in my mind that large numbers of people have become dependent on these handouts to enable them to work far less than they need to. I know people on low or zero hours contracts who juggle two jobs to keep their income level up. That's what should be encouraged. The Tax Credits system is unsustainable and it needs to be tackled.
