I agree with Divebuddy.......purely anecdotal I know, but I was at school between 1939-1953 and I never say knives used as weapons, particularly as one joined the boy Scouts and the first thing he bought was a sheath knife....all Boy Scouts had them.
Fights in the school playground...yes....but knives, which were readily available, were rarely used.

ummmm
Ah yes, I see those links now, two almost unreadable reports of two altercations that took place in Croydon in 1926, and one that Mcfluff alone can read about a soldier raping a sixteen year old girl back in 1952.
And what they prove is anyone's guess.
/// And I only mentioned it as you linked your thread to this one. Why you did that, AOG, I have no idea... ///
Even more proof of how standards have declined, surely it is not rocket science?

/// ol, I will just nod politely AOG as you tell me why a man born in 1953 that kills children supports your view that children of the 50's were not violent. ///
I do not know what 'man' you are referring to, or when he carried out his killing, but since he was born in 1953, makes him a man in say the 70s, so he could have been a child then.

Sqad and divebuddy I am pleased to see at least two can understand what I am trying to get across.
And yes sqad Boy Scouts did go around with knives in a sheath attached to one's belt, even school boys at school did.
Boy Scouts also carried a six foot staff of Ash as well as a small axe also attached to one's belt.
Boys of that time also had Bows and Arrows, throwing knives, air guns, sling shot and Scotch Arrows, which consisted of a stout piece of wood cut out of the hedge row and sharpened at the end, with cuts in the other end to hold a paper flight, then we wrapped around it a piece of string with a knot at one end, then gathering the two together we launched the arrow into the air while retaining the piece of string.
All this and I can never remember anyone being accidentally or deliberately killed or injured.

If your gang, with your stone age weapons, met mine with our state of the art weapons it would be like Rorke's Drift again.
Our WMD's were short plank of wood about 6"x3" x2". Clamp a 8" length of steel electrical coduit pipe with capped end. Drill hole at top of one end to accomodate a banger fuse. Empty a couple of squib and place black powder down tube. Ram with marbles ,ball bearings or gravel and light blue touch paper. No one actually got killed or injured but my hearing suffers these days.. :-)

You have got me reminiscing and mulling over 2 years as a Casualty Officer at the London Hospital ( now the Royal London) and the Royal Sussex County hospital in Brighton, between 1960 and 1962.
At the London Hospital (Whitechapel) stab wounds were not uncommon, usually involving young men in their late teens and early 20's. Usually black and almost all racially motivated.
During my time in Brighton, I never experienced one stabbing and certainly no school children.

No we didn't have such advanced weapons such as that, since gunpowder had only just been invented, :0)
But what we did have was Potash tablets and sulphur powder (both freely available from the chemist at that time).
We would then crush the potash tablets and mix in the sulphur.
Then acquire two large diameter bolts and one matching thread nut, screw one bolt half way into the nut and pack the remaining half with some of the powder and then screw the other bolt into position, compacting the powder between the two bolts.
Throw the device up in the air and await the loud explosion upon landing to earth.
I do apologise for the distraction from such a tragic story thread, but I was suddenly taken for a nostalgic trip down memory lane, forgive me please.

I've remembered that in the 1960's I carried a sheath knife, rather smart and with a bone handle, strapped to the belt of my jeans. I used it for sharpening my pencils when sketching, but it was also a bit of fashion statement and teenage rebellion I suppose. No way would I or anyone I knew (everyone carried a knife of some sort) have thought about using it as a weapon.
