Why can't the package holiday airlines take these Brits on a bus to Cairo Airport, and fly them home from there ? There isn't any restrictions for British planes to go to Cairo is there ?

Sharm is a modern town (no old town or antiquities). I believe it was first developed as a resort by the Israelis after the 1967 war. I suspect most visitors would rather go to the Ministry of Sound that sample the Nubian Music. Agreed, it is the sun (I go in February) that atteacks visitors rather than travellers.

Agree with Jackdaw. My younger daughter insisted on booking her honeymoon at Sharm etc. 10 years ago, despite my advice not to (she's the argumentative sort) and then after a bomb attack, or something, around there she had the stress of switching at short notice. Can't understand it myself. I'd like to see pyramids etc., but otherwise sun and sand are sun and sand and you can get the same in Spain, France, Portugal etc..

Sharm has grown considerably in recent years. When we first went it catered predominately for divers and many of the hotels were more like hostels. Since then it has become a sprawling holiday resort.
