Can we stop giving money to foreigners and use it to do some proper flood defences? We should also suspend EU payments for at least 1 year and add that to the pot.

We no longer have our own country and help others when people here who have worked all theirs lives have to go to a food bank and pensioners pay tax on their pension to give to people who come here and get benefits When you see 25 people in hijabs and with loads of kids within five minutes of getting off a bus its a joke to say we look after our own

/// As this thread has descended down to the usual racist and xenophobic level, I shall retire. ///
The question put was "Is It Time Our Charity Began At Home"?
So didn't you expect it to be about our charity being spent abroad?
But no, it is the apologists usual weapon to bring into play the the racist and xenophobic cards, hoping that they will somehow frighten some not to speak their minds, so as to somehow stifle further debate on the subject?

//What has the number of women wearing hijabs got to do with spending more money in this country then? //
only bordeaux can answer that with certainty but probably a clumsy way of highlighting a disparity of spending. in 2014 the then government pledged £2.3bn for flood defences over the next 6 years. by comparison, the same amount is spent EVERY YEAR keeping illegal immigrants in this country.

Afore ye Go
//Mush...Swansea is hardly "remotest Wales"
We are a busy, multicultural City, with 3 Colleges and a population of about 239,000. In the 2011 Census, Muslims accounted for 4.8% of the population of Britain, and that includes Wales and Southall.
(By the way, have a look at the Wiki entry for Southall. Only 13.3% of the population appears to be Muslim....35% is listed as Christian !)
I just wish some people here on AB would get the racial and cultural make up of Great Britain into the right proportion. //
Mosques in Swansea CITY =4
Mosques in London Borough of Merton = 13

The fact that the system is not perfect is no reason to demand charity is never to be offered outside one's own home. Nor does having a regional disaster mean we are inevitably incapable of coping with it without outside help. One cannot rationally use the occurrence of one as an excuse to attack the other. There seems to be a difficulty experienced by some to separate different issues. It must be very confusing for them, and they have my sympathy.
You have put that into words far better than I could, here we have a disaster and the emergency services, troops and volunteers swing into action.
In many places people are hundreds if not more miles from help with little or no infrastructure, absolutely a different situation.
It seems to me that unless you strongly side with one avenue of thought you are seen to be a keen supporter of the opposite view - nothing could be further from the truth.
We are blessed with charitable help at every turn in this country , yes some fall through the net but overall , there is help out there.

People showing their very ignorant true colours mamya. But. To all those who've said 'we can afford both' (I.e. Foreign aid AND flood defences)....... So.....why aren't we? You're all seeing the major flooding hotspots but those outside Yorks and Lancs aren't seeing the damage in smaller towns like Brighouse and Mirfield.
