I suggest that today they would either be vandalised or ripped off the walls, neither of which happened long ago.

Well obviously they weren't going to make them out of tin plate and nailed to the walls, encouraging 'take away' were they?
In all the years I remember them in situ I can never remember any being removed or even tamped with, they remained operative for years.
