Answering With So.......

If there is one thing guaranteed to get my goat (and there are many), it is people on news/current affairs programs answering every question with " So........" there's a guy on Newsnight doing it RIGHT NOW! Aaaaaargh, why did this start about a year ago? It drives me up the wall: I recently watched a meteorologist being interviewed about weather patterns, and he answered 5 out of 7 questions in that way. Other fav bugbears are: pronouncing SIXTH as SIKTH (step forward Jeremy Paxman), pronouncing the letter H as 'haich', pronouncing mischievous as MISCHEEVIOUS, calling the supermarket TESCO'S.....I'd better stop now!

It doesn't 'verge on regionism' - it applies it, but that is a very long way from trying to shoehorn some vague nod in the direction of racism, which is a very different scenario.

Given your own oft-expressed hypersensitivity to such connections, I am surprised that you would look for such a dubious sub-text in the posts of others.

I'm a bit confused about who said what to whom on this thread, but I don't think the BBC are patronising anyone by employing Sara Cox. She is an amusing and entertaining presenter, regardless of her accent.

It's a personal bugbear of mine that I believe that the BBC does employ some presenters on the basis of their accents, in order to appeal to certain sections of its audience.

There is nothing inherently wrong with people enjoying hearing accents local to their area, or the BBC accommodating that desire, as a pubic service broadcaster.

My issue is that, in the case of individuals like Ms. Cox, her accent appears to be her only reason for employment, since she brings nothing else to the table in terms of wit, intelligence, or interest.

Andy--hughes, I agree with many things that you say and I enjoy your posts, but I really don't think Sara Cox is employed just for her accent. She is youngish [possibly only a couple of years younger than me ;)] , attractive-ish, she appeals to all sorts of people; not necessarily people with her accent.

It's not Ms Cox's inability to meet my 'exacting standards' that is the issue with me Talbot, her lack of intelligence, humour and interest is exhibited every time she appears on air on a BBC radio station to which I contribute financially.

That entitles me to express a view, which I have done.

So long as they are clear - I dont mind the accent however there is audience preference for the musical accents - south west welsh and scottish and rejection for brummy and scouse which are both assovaited with crminials and honestly I dont know why

I think Frank Skinner and Paul O'Grady would take issue with you there - both have highly successful radio and television careers, and an accent of those indicated apiece!

Andy, there are many presenters on the radio that are not intelligent or funny. Steve Wright springs to mind, but I've been happily listening to him for years. I don't know why we've picked on Sara Cox here, except that she does appeal to lots of different people and has a northern accent.
What do you think of Lauren Laverne? A very distinct northern accent and very knowledgable about music and popular culture. I thought she was great talking about Bowie the other day.

I've just googled Sarah Cox. She can't be that daft. She seems fairly successful.

I wouldn't buy a used car from anyone off the telly (or anyone else, really) I like Frank Skinner, but not Paul O'Grady. Their accents have nothing to do with their appeal to me.
