I think many politicians exhibit signs of what would be seen, in “ordinary” people, to be a mental illness. Some of their reactions to the migrant crisis in particular has demonstrates this quite well.
Ordinary people see the continent being invaded by people, some of them intent on violence to achieve their aims, who have no right to be here, were not invited, have no connections here, have an alien culture which is incompatible with that of western Europe and for whom there are no facilities.
Ordinary people would envisage the problems this might bring, see the harmful effects it would have on their lives, their families and their communities and so seek ways to keep them out. Politicians argue amongst themselves how best to “distribute” them and to accommodate and care for them.

I did begin to think that she had been forced into a corner of her own making
to start with. I had a lot of respect for her, given her upbringing and commitment to a democratic Europe. Except that it is turning out to be anything but democratic.
She is a very intelligent, high-achiever - who is having a breakdown. Her world is not what she wants it to be and has worked for. On a personal level I am very sorry for her. When that happens you cling to the few things that are important to you, even if times have passed them by.
Yes, she has, sadly, been broken by the situation. :(
