/// But I cannot help observing the grotesque irony that in the capital of Germany this deluded woman should have spoken of how ‘England’s fascistic side’ affected the British view of Germany and World War II. ///
/// She even had the nerve to grumble about being ‘completely brainwashed’ by films she saw in her childhood showing the British ‘being marvellous and beating the Nazis’. ///
You can't get any more anti-British than that.

The Mail has got itself into a tizz because its readership is the Middle England bracket who are patriotic, and equally annoyed at people they perceive as being unpatriotic.
For Mr Glover therefore, the task is a simple one - write a feature that panders to the Mail readership. Huff and puff about the disgrace of not only being left-wing, but unpatriotic, two aspects of opinion which inflame the Mail readership.
The mail readership likes to be inflamed and angry - so really Mr Glover's task was a fish / barrel interface.
She is one actress, high profile (ish) but still just one person whose opinions can be discounted - unless you want to get upset over them.
Personally, I wouldn't bother.

From the link: quoting George Orwell, a ‘leftie’ who eventually came to see the error of his ways:
//‘England is perhaps the only great country whose intellectuals are ashamed of their own nationality. In Left-wing circles it is always felt there is something slightly disgraceful in being an Englishman and that it is a duty to snigger at every British institution.’ //
What an astutely observant man he was.

"self-declared socialist" forgot champagne in there
In the 40's WW11 with the leftie attitude thats now infected and running rampant here, this country would have been "handed" over to and run by germany now..oh hold on ..
they (not all though ) seem more than happy to throw open the doors and allow anybody in and the more of them the better and if theyre not white then theyre really pleased...they seem to be embarassed about being white for some odd reason..they are a disgrace

I think in your eagerness to trash the Left, you are allowing your perception of history to run away with you.
Specifically - you are putting the cart before the horse with regard to your assertion that 'leftie' attitudes would have cost Britain the war.
The reason why left-wing attitudes have been allowed to flourish in the last fifty years - rightly or wrongly is a separate debate - is because they have had the freedom to do so, freedom won by the generation that fought the war.
One of the problems with giving people freedom is that they won't always use it in the way that the givers think that they should - but that is essentially what freedom means.
It gives Ms. Thompson the freedom to express her opinion, Mr Glover the freedom to be highly paid for pandering to his readership, and it gives us the freedom to be upset, or in my case, to be not especially bothered.
Freedom is a wonderful concept, but if you start curtailing it because it doesn't do what you think it should, then it ceases to be freedom at all.

bazwillrun - //"it's really not worth getting upset over."
advice youd do well to take heed of on most things you post on ...whats good for the goose and all that...and FYI nobodys getting upset , just posting opinions..thought you were all for that //
I am all for posting opinions, and if this thread can avoid spiralling into a personal attack-fest like they usually do, I will be all for that as well!

What Geirge Orwell renounced of course was totalitarianism, not socialism. He lived at the time of Stalin and satirised then in Animal Farm (where each of the pigs stands for a famous Bolshevik) and 1984
But another book with reading is 'The Progressive Patriot' by Billy Bragg. It would be hard to find a more patriotic book by a left winger
Many 'lefties' do like to *** off their country of course as do many 'righties' Bot sure anyone side has the upper hand in that regard
